If a couple of Republican legislators have their way, the voters may get a chance to change that — again. Rep. Debbie Mayfield, R-Vero Beach, and Sen. Rene Garcia, R-Hialeah, have introduced joint resolutions in their respective chambers — HJR 767 and SJR 942 — to return the position to an elected one and elevate it to a Cabinet-level office again.

A growing faction of Florida Republicans are supporting the move to make the state education commissioner an elected position, a proposal designed to reverse the state's adoption of Common Core standards. The plan, offered by Republican Rep. Debbie Mayfield of Vero Beach, clashes with GOP legislative leaders who support the role of presidential candidate and former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush in introducing Common Core ideas during his two terms in office.

Sue Woltanski has grave concerns about Florida's testing system and how it affects children and learning. When she attended a recent State Board of Education meeting to voice her views, along with dozens of other advocates, she quickly became disillusioned.
